Department of Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery Unit 1

Lahore – The APSS Multidisciplinary Basic Spine Course & Hands-On Cadaveric Workshop successfully concluded its 3-day event from 19th to 21st September 2024 at Mayo Hospital Lahore / King Edward Medical University. This comprehensive workshop brought together national and international experts, providing participants with cutting-edge knowledge and hands-on training in spine surgery techniques.
The workshop featured esteemed international faculty, including:
Prof. S.I Young Park – Chief of Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Department, Yonsei University College of Medicine, Severance Hospital, Korea.
Prof. Naresh Kumar – Chief of Orthopedic and Spine Surgery Department, National University Hospital, Singapore.

Over the course of three days, participants engaged in a series of educational sessions, covering topics such as spinal examination, imaging techniques, neuro diagnostics, spinal trauma, infection, tumors, and advanced surgical methods. The final day featured an immersive cadaveric workshop, where participants practiced essential surgical techniques, including lumbar discectomy, pedicle screw insertion, and PLIF/TLIF techniques.
Secretary general APOA Prof.Arif Khan praised the organization of this Succesful APSS accrediated acadamic course and highlighted the importance of Such courses for Academic growth of young orthopedic and spine surgery fellows.
In addition to the academic sessions, our international faculty had the opportunity to explore the rich culture and history of Lahore. They visited historical landmarks such as the Badshahi Mosque, Lahore Fort, and Shalimar Gardens, experiencing the vibrant cultural heritage of Punjab, Pakistan. The faculty expressed their gratitude for the warm hospitality and were deeply impressed by the historical and cultural significance of the region. They also expressed their enthusiasm for future collaborations, promising to return for further academic and educational activities in Pakistan.
The success of the event was greatly supported by Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz , Vice Chancellor of King Edward Medical University, who not only facilitated the organization of the course but also expressed his heartfelt gratitude to both national and international faculty for their valuable contributions. Prof. Mahmood Ayyaz praised the dedication and hard work of the organizing committee and reaffirmed his commitment to fostering continuous learning and growth at King Edward Medical University. He promised ongoing support for future educational initiatives at the university, ensuring that it remains a hub of academic excellence in medical education.
A special mention goes to Prof. M Iqbal Mirza , Head of the Department of Orthopaedic & Spine Surgery Unit 1, for his unwavering support in uplifting the department. His continuous encouragement and commitment to promoting educational activities have played a vital role in the growth of the department and the success of this event. Under his leadership, the department has flourished as a center of excellence in orthopedic education and surgery.
A special thanks goes to Assistant Prof. Shahid Ali Ch . for his instrumental role in organizing this event and for his tireless efforts in re-establishing the Spine Surgery Unit at Mayo Hospital Lahore after more than a decade. His dedication and vision have been pivotal in making this event and the reactivation of the unit a reality.\
